Rev. Samuel Sherman Betts, age 95, of Cadiz, passed away June 5, 2025, in Woodsfield, Ohio.
He was born September 1, 1929, in New Philadelphia, Ohio, to parents Wayne and Clara (Bucey) Betts. Sam grew up on the Betts family farm on Beaver Dam Road in Harrison County.
Sam graduated from Bowerston High School and later from Anderson University and School of Theology in Anderson, Indiana. He became an ordained minister and served as Pastor of the Cadiz Church of God (Anderson) from 1976 – 1989. He was also called to serve as a missionary in Kenya from 1958 – 1963. Samuel proudly served his country as a veteran of the US Marine Corps during the Korean War.
Sam is survived by his beloved wife Martha E. (Collier) Betts, his children: Cheryl (Roger) Royer, Rev. Daniel (Sulinda) Betts, and David (Heather) Betts, He is also survived by his step-children: Vickie Mellot, Kathie (Arthur) Yocum, and Jamie Simpson, as well as all of his loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife Betty Jane (Ryan) Betts, his sister, Wanda Royer, and his stepson, James Michael Simpson.
Friends and family will be received Monday, June 9, 2025, from 4:00 – 6:00 PM at the Borkoski Funeral Home in Cadiz. Funeral services will be officiated by his son, Reverend Daniel Betts on Tuesday at 11:00 AM with full military honors following. Private burial will take place at Beaver Valley Cemetery in Monroe Township, Harrison County.
