Nora Kathryn Chisnell, 97, of St. Clairsville, Ohio, formerly of New Athens, passed away peacefully on October 19, 2023, at WVU Wheeling Hospital. She was born August 1, 1926, a daughter of the late Charles and Velma Varner Hurd. Nora grew up in tough times as her childhood years were during the Great Depression.  Her father passed away suddenly when Nora was young, leaving her mother Velma with 4 children. Velma could not afford the expense of raising 4 children on her income as a cook, so her friend Mary Hood graciously adopted Nora and took her into her home.  Against the odds, Nora was an excellent student and was active in both the band and chorus. She went on to graduate as a Registered Nurse from OVGH in 1947. In addition to raising 3 children in New Athens, she was a nurse for the private practices of Dr. Henderson and Dr. Keefer. She completed her career as a nurse for the Harrison Co. Health Department. One of her greatest joys in her final months was meeting her youngest great-grandchild Emerson (son of Dirk and Jess of Gooding, Idaho), and holding the baby on her lap.  Special thanks to granddaughter Chloe who made many trips for Nora's podiatry care, and to loyal friend Patti Patton who took time out of her busy life to visit Nora. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Louis "Bud" Chisnell, her daughter Cindy Jones and a son, Jeff Chisnell, her adoptive mother Mary Hurd; brothers: John and Charles Hurd and sister Mary Murray. Nora is survived by her son Mark (Laurie) Chisnell; grandchildren: Sara Chisnell, Hope Chisnell, Dirk Chisnell, Chloe Chisnell, Lawanda (Sid) Tucker, Lance Jones, Jeffrey (Emily) Chisnell, Amanda Taggart; nieces: Susan Murray, Anna Marie Besece and four great grandchildren. Friends will be received Tuesday October 24, 2023, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Borkoski Funeral Home, 555 East Market Street, Cadiz, OH., where services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. with Rev.
